Transfer boards assist residents with limited mobility but good sitting balance to transfer from one surface to another of similar height (bed to wheelchair, wheelchair to toilet, wheelchair to car seat, etc,). They are typically made of wood or plastic and come in a variety of shapes and sizes to meet the needs of the user. Most of these devices are one piece, requiring the resident to have adequate upper body strength to move along the board. However, several models have two parts: a stationary part and a sliding piece that moves along the stationary part. This setup can make transfers easier for those who can safely and adequately manipulate the moving parts. Other features to look for include hand holes and hooks built into the board to secure it to wheelchair arms and prevent unwanted movement.
