A pessary is a flexible device that is used in the non-surgical management of pelvic support problems such as uterine and vaginal prolapse as well as stress urinary incontinence. Pessaries are available in several sizes and shapes including round or "donut" shaped, "U" shaped, and cube shaped. These devices need to be fit by a physician and proper fitting may require the wearer to try several sizes and types. The frequency of follow up visits are left to the discretion of the physician and will be dependent upon the motivation and ability of the wearer to effectively manage the pessary. Pessaries should not be placed in elderly or cognitively impaired individuals without regular follow-up.
